Under-Sink Water Filter Installation

Better drinking water in one afternoon. Under-sink filters remove contaminants at the point of use — the simplest upgrade for cleaner, better-tasting water.

What is Under-Sink Water Filter Installation?

Under-sink water filters are the most accessible and affordable way to improve your drinking water quality. Installed out of sight in the cabinet beneath your kitchen sink, these compact filtration systems connect to your cold water supply and deliver filtered water through either your existing faucet or a dedicated filtration faucet installed on your countertop. Modern under-sink filters use activated carbon, catalytic carbon, or multi-stage filtration to remove chlorine, lead, mercury, VOCs (volatile organic compounds), cysts, and other common tap water contaminants while preserving beneficial minerals and maintaining strong water pressure. They're the ideal solution for homeowners who want improved drinking and cooking water without the complexity or cost of a whole-house system. Installation typically takes 1–2 hours and requires no special skills or permanent plumbing modifications. Most systems use standard quick-connect fittings that make both installation and filter changes simple. With filter replacement costs of just $20–$60 every 6–12 months, under-sink filters offer the lowest total cost of ownership of any water treatment solution.

Key Benefits

  • Removes chlorine taste and odor for better-tasting drinking and cooking water
  • Filters lead, mercury, VOCs, and other harmful contaminants at the point of use
  • Compact design fits easily under the kitchen sink — completely out of sight
  • Maintains water pressure — no waiting for filtered water like with pitcher filters
  • Low cost of ownership — filter replacements are $20–$60 every 6–12 months
  • Simple installation and filter changes — no plumber needed for most systems

Our Process

1

System Selection

Based on your water quality concerns and budget, the right filter type is selected — single-stage carbon for chlorine/taste, multi-stage for broader contaminant removal, or ultrafiltration for comprehensive protection.

2

Faucet Preparation

If a dedicated filter faucet is desired, a hole is drilled in the sink or countertop (if no existing soap dispenser or sprayer hole is available). Some systems connect inline and deliver filtered water through your existing faucet.

3

Filter Installation

The filter housing is mounted inside the cabinet. The cold water supply line is tapped with a feed valve, and tubing connects the supply to the filter and from the filter to the dedicated faucet or existing tap.

4

Flush & Test

The system is flushed per manufacturer instructions (typically 5–10 minutes of running water) to remove carbon fines and prime the filter. Water taste and flow rate are verified.

Typical Cost

$150–$600

Factors That Affect Your Cost

  • Filter type (single-stage carbon vs. multi-stage vs. ultrafiltration)
  • Brand and quality (Aquasana, Culligan, 3M, Watts, Brondell)
  • Whether a dedicated faucet is included or drilling is required
  • Number of filtration stages
  • NSF/ANSI certifications (42, 53, 58, 401)
  • Professional installation vs. DIY
  • Ongoing filter replacement costs

Under-Sink Water Filter Installation FAQ

Under-sink carbon filters remove chlorine, taste, odor, and many common contaminants — they're simpler, faster (no storage tank), maintain higher water pressure, and waste no water. Reverse osmosis removes virtually everything, including dissolved minerals, PFAS, fluoride, and TDS — but is more complex, produces wastewater, and requires a storage tank. Choose carbon filtration for general improvement; choose RO for comprehensive purification or specific contaminant concerns.
